Former chief minister to oversee refuge in St Aubin

The former chief minister will oversee the running of a new refuge for men in St Aubin in Jersey.

Frank Walker is one of four members of an overseeing committee which will guide the way the refuge at Sanctuary House is run.

The former guest house in the High Street will have rooms for 10 men and a live-in manager.

It will give shelter to men who need help after a breakdown or who are homeless after a divorce or break-up.

The other members of the overseeing committee are the parish deputy Sean Power, parish rector the Reverend Mark Bond and fundraiser Colin Taylor.

People staying at Sanctuary House can get counselling and support from outside agencies.

Members of St Aubin Residents Association have argued St Aubin is not the right location for the shelter.

The Christian charity Caring Hands said the refuge will provide much needed support in the community.

It is expected to open in about two weeks time.
