Jersey Police were called to incidents of domestic violence involving 74 men in 2010

Jersey's Home Affairs Minister said one in 500 men in Jersey complained to police about being a victim of domestic violence in 2010.

Senator Ian Le Marquand told the States police had been called to 94 different incidents involving 74 different men.

He said that statistic is likely to be lower than the actual number.

Senator Le Marquand said that men who had experienced physical or psychological abuse may have been reluctant to report it to police.

He said: "That's a problem that exists not just in relation to men reporting abuse but also ladies as well.

"It is one of the difficulties we have in seeking to combat the problem, the relatively low incidents of reporting."

A men's refuge was opened in St Aubin in May and was full within hours of opening.
