Fewer people referred to Jersey victim support service

A charity that supports victims of crime in Jersey said fewer people were referred to them by the police in 2010.

A report from the Victim Support service shows a fall in the number of referrals, with about 200 last year, compared to 240 in 2009.

There were fewer referrals for grave and criminal assault, common assault and burglary.

Hazel Jury, the charity's manager, said she believed it was because crime levels in Jersey are decreasing.

She said: "If crime levels are going down that is obviously got to be a good thing, but if people do need the service, we would like you to come through and we are here for you."

She was pleased the organisation had secured a government grant for 2011, but said she was unsure what the future holds for Victim Support Jersey.
