Frenchman wins world beach art title in Jersey

Jersey's beaches were transformed into works of art over the weekend as a Frenchman was named the best beach artist in the world.

The island hosted the inaugural World Beach Art Championships.

Artists used rakes as their paint brushes and Jersey's golden sand as the canvass on which to create their work.

The winning design by Sam Dougados consisted of parallel lines and concentric circles at Ouaisne.

Judge Nick Romeril said: "Sam's creation was captivating in design and content and beautifully mirrored the surrounding landscape.

"His work received critical acclaim from the many members of the public that came to watch him at work and he is an extremely talented man indeed."

Mr Dougados said: "This award is a great honour and very much unexpected. I feel that everyone was a winner today as each piece of art was a masterpiece in its own right.

"It was a privilege to be invited and I very much look forward to next year's event."

Mike Tait from Jersey Tourism said: "At the outset the objective was to get create engaging images that projected Jersey's natural beauty into the national and international media.

"It has been a lot of fun, a lot of people have been hugely appreciative and we can say it was an outstanding success for Jersey."

Taking part were artists from Jersey and around the world, including the US, France and England.
