Jersey minister's first overseas engagement postponed

Senator Gorst was due to attend the British Irish Council summit as his first official engagement

The first official overseas engagement for Jersey's new Chief Minister has been postponed.

Senator Ian Gorst was due to represent the island at the British Irish Council Summit but the event, due to take place in Dublin, was moved to a later date.

It was moved as a mark of respect, following the death of the Irish Prime Minister's mother, Mrs Eithne Kelly.

Senator Gorst and Assistant Chief Minister Senator Philip Bailhache, were due to discuss youth unemployment.

The British Irish Council was set up to promote relations between the governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, were also due to be at the forum.

Senator Gorst said he was "committed" to tackling the rise in unemployment and would be "discussing this issue with my counterparts".
