Jersey employers waiting on Euro future for jobs

Employers in Jersey are waiting for the value of the Euro to improve before taking on more staff, a recruitment agency claims.

A record 1,500 people were registered unemployed in October but 2,569 declared themselves unemployed on census forms in March.

The States plans to spend millions of pounds retraining people.

However, Tina Palmer, from recruitment agency ASL, said the problem may be out of Jersey's control.

"All our clients are in financial services with larger organisations in the UK and they are being told no recruitment," she said.

"Everyone is waiting for the Euro to sort itself out and if the larger company in the UK says no recruitment then the local branch in Jersey is told no recruitment as well."

Ms Palmer said the local companies wanted to employ people and fill vacancies but were not able to.
