Jersey States unspent money will help jobless

Jersey's government plans to spend £7.5m helping young unemployed people find work over the next year.

The money is part of £40m which was left unspent by States departments at the end of 2011.

In November Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst said tackling unemployment was his top priority.

He said he would use the money on a scheme helping people find a new job and paying for an increase in income support claims.

As well as unemployment, about £1.5m will be spent to maintain and refurbish States housing at Le Marais and Le Squez.

An additional £100,000 will also be spent on screening 55-year-olds for bowel cancer.

Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said the money was being used where it was most needed.

Other projects, which will get funding include a cold weather bonus and anti-discrimination legislation.
