Police warning over Jersey website scam

Police have issued a warning over "fraudsters" using the Jersey Insight website.

Jeremy House, crime prevention officer, said people had contacted the police after they had been approached by "scammers" on the online marketplace.

He said the scam involved buyers overpaying by cheque, then asking the seller to pay back the difference before their cheque went on to bounce.

JT, which operates the website, said it took any fraud exceptionally seriously.

Barna Kutvolgyi, from the company, said: "We do all we can to prevent scams wherever possible but we would ask all users to remain vigilant.

"If they feel the authenticity of any product, buyer or seller is in question they should contact us immediately."

Mr House said in a few cases islanders had given their bank details to the scammers.

He said: "Unless you are completely sure of any transaction... do not enter into any agreement with any person or company.

"Never agree to send off money, or part with personal information to a stranger."
