Jersey States to pay for Guernsey fishing licence

Deputy Labey said it should help ensure the future of the important traditional industry

Jersey fishermen are being offered financial and administrative help when applying for a licence to fish in Bailiwick of Guernsey waters.

Under the new licence system starting on 1 February, anyone wanting to fish within 12 nautical miles of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark has to be licensed.

The Economic Development Department has offered to pay the £500 administration fee needed to apply for a licence.

A dedicated officer will offer advice on completing applications.

The officer will also be able to help in the collation of fishing history information as the Guernsey authorities have asked for proof anyone applying has previously fished in Bailiwick waters.

Deputy Carolyn Labey, assistant minister for economic development, said: "I would like to encourage any fishermen who are considering applying for a licence to come forward to get the advice and support they may need.

"I hope this will allow fisherman to continue working in waters that they have been fishing for many years to ensure that their livelihoods are protected and that we maintain a strong Jersey fishing fleet in this important traditional industry."
