A Jersey politician has asked the States for money to fund a £30m green initiative.

Deputy Geoff Southern has requested the payment from Senator Philip Ozouf, the island's Treasury Minister.

He said the fund would help pay for environmental projects, including home energy saving, renewable energy power and solar heating.

He said it could be funded from States borrowing, bonds, or the interest generated from the States' reserves.

The matter will be debated by the States of Jersey, and Deputy Southern said he hoped it would be approved by September.

He said: "There are a number of companies involved in energy conservation measures.

"We are already sponsoring them... this could be an extension of this scheme."
