Jersey unemployment numbers down in April

The number of people registered as unemployed in Jersey has fallen for the first time in 2013, according to government figures.

The monthly report showed there were 1,930 people registered unemployed, the first time it has fallen bellow 2,000 since December.

In January, it passed the 2,000 mark for the first time. A quarter of people seeking work were under 25.

Senator Philip Ozouf, said figures were "moving in the right direction".

The number of people looking for work was 190 higher in April 2013 compared to the same time in 2012.

The report issued by the States Statistics Unit and the Social Security Department found that 72% of those actively seeking work were receiving income support.
