Jersey pulls out of Britain in Bloom flower competition

Jersey will not be entering a national flower competition next year because of a lack of support.

The island has achieved great success in the Britain in Bloom competition, winning one silver and five silver gilt awards in the past three years.

However, only five parishes have put themselves forward for the competition and six is the minimum requirement.

A spokeswoman for Jersey Tourism said it was hopeful of being able to enter again in 2015.

She said it was the first time in seven or eight years Jersey had not held a local competition, nor taken part in the national event.

John Lamy, chairman of the Grouville Britain in Bloom group, said: "I am extremely disappointed. Grouville and other island parishes have entered Britain in Bloom now for a considerable number of years with a great deal of success."

He said he was concerned Jersey would struggle to get involved in future after opting out.
