Group to look at alcohol issues in Jersey

A new working party is to be established in Jersey to help the drinks trade and politicians work towards reducing alcohol abuse.

The Treasury Minister Philip Ozou said the body would work with the States to come up with action plans.

He listed the idea as part of a budget amendment which also cuts his proposed rise in duty on beer and wine.

Deputy Sean Power said the measures were still excessive and wants no extra duty on alcohol.

In the new proposals, wine duty would drop from seven pence to five pence and the levy on a pint of weaker beer falls from two pence to a penny.

Senator Ozouf said: "We do have high alcohol consumption and we have to support our health colleagues.

"I have compromised a little bit and I hope that shows some willingness to having listened."

Last month it was announced taxpayers in Jersey could be up to £800 better off next year as the treasury plans to cut income tax.
