Island Energy said the restoration of supplies would be a staged process

Islanders who have been without gas since Saturday will start to be reconnected from Thursday, Island Energy has said.

About 4,500 people in Jersey have been without gas after a software failure triggered the plant's shutdown.

Island Energy said it would turn on its plant on Wednesday and monitor its performance for 24 hours.

It added if this went as planned it would begin the "reinstatement of supply from Thursday".

The company said the restoration would be a staged process and customers would be informed by the company when it was safe to turn on their gas.

Restored by Sunday

"There are a number of customers who require a visit from an engineer - these will start on Thursday," Island Energy said in a statement.

"Please do not turn on your gas until you have been told it is safe to do so."

Island Energy said commercial and priority customers, particularly those who are vulnerable, would have their gas supply restored first and it hoped to have the gas supply restored for all customers by Sunday.

The firm previously said it had brought in 30 engineers from Guernsey and the Isle of Man and had 22 from a UK company on standby to come to the island to help with the restoration if needed.

It had also asked IT company Rockwell to investigate how a rogue piece of code got into the system and triggered the shutdown.

The gas company has asked islander not to turn their gas on "until they have been told it is safe to do so".

People are advised to make sure all gas appliances are switched off and to turn off the gas supply to homes at the meter.

It added people would be communicated about how to restore the gas to their homes via a letter, social media, its website and local media.
