A red weather warning about strong winds is in place in Jersey, with police warning people to stay safe.

The highest alert level from Jersey Met Office came as winds speeds were forecast to hit 60mph (97km/h) between 17:00 GMT and 19:00.

There could also be heavy rain at times, with a prediction of a gale force of 10 later in the day, it added.

The Government of Jersey warned of a "potential risk of flooding at times in low lying areas".

It advised people to travel only if necessary and to stay indoors where possible.

Power cuts, travel disruption and risk of flying debris and fallen trees were also a risk, as was damage to property, it said.

Services including Jersey Met and the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service were monitoring the "evolving weather situation" with visits to residents in the Grands Vaux area as well as the erection of flood defences.

It added: "We urge all residents to take appropriate precautions, stay informed, and follow the advice issued by the Government of Jersey, Jersey Met and Emergency Services."

Those planning to travel by ferry should check for delays or cancellations, the government said.

Condor Ferries said the weather conditions would impact high-speed sailings and to check for changes.

Jersey Met Office issued the warning just before 09:00 GMT.

States of Jersey Police posted about the weather warning on social media, adding: "Stay safe out there."
