Islanders encouraged to volunteer in Rwanda
- Published
A non-profit organisation is encouraging islanders to volunteer in Rwanda.
Hands Around The World works alongside local volunteers to help paint schools and carry out small-scale renovations.
It said no special skills were required, only "bags of enthusiasm", and that it was open to people of all ages and levels of fitness.
Team leader Mike Haden said the schools it had worked on had made "significant strides" to provide basic education.
He said: "With our local project manager, we have been able to complete several construction projects in schools in Bugarama, including new classrooms, toilets, kitchens and security walls.
"On top of this, volunteers can make a real contribution to improving conditions.
"They will get a great welcome and make lasting friendships."
Mr Haden said the experience of volunteering "in a developing country has taught us many lessons".
He said: "We don't believe that we have the answers nor can we solve problems without adequate experience of the local situation.
"Volunteers need to understand local aspirations, listen and encourage local initiatives."
The visit will take place at the end of July and the start of August, with placements lasting between two and four weeks.
A presentation will be held on 15 February at 19:30 GMT at St Lawrence Parish Hall for those interested.
