An initiative to raise breast cancer awareness among young people in Jersey is being pioneered by two charities.

Breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! is to work with ABC Jersey to bring an educational roadshow to the island's secondary schools, project bosses said.

ABC Jersey assists people emotionally, practically and financially in their fight against breast cancer.

Rhiannon Murray, of CoppaFeel!, said she wanted students to feel "empowered".

The roadshow will be led by The Boobettes, a team of CoppaFeel! volunteers who have been affected by breast cancer between the ages of 18 and 35.

Ms Murray said the aim of the initiative was to encourage regular checking among young people.

'Signs and symptoms'

She said: "Their stories inspire others to think differently about their bodies, to get to know their normal now and make checking a lifelong habit, so that they can spot any changes in the future and be aware of the signs and symptoms."

ABC Jersey is also hosting a series of events for the entire community, including fundraising nights, educational presentations and breast screening Q&A sessions.

Treasurer Sue Frost said raising awareness was the "primary focus" for 2024.

She said: "We wish to reach all individuals that make up the diverse tapestry of our island, all ages, genders and backgrounds need to know that they are not alone, that there is support, and that early detection makes such a difference."

The secondary school roadshow is taking place on 5 and 6 March.
