New York City police have charged a nanny with the murder of two children discovered stabbed to death in a Manhattan apartment last month.

Yoselyn Ortega, 50, was charged in the hospital where she is recovering from self-inflicted stab wounds to her neck.

The children's mother, Marina Krim, returned home on 25 October to find the bodies of two-year-old Leo and six-year-old Lucia in the bath.

Mrs Ortega faces two counts each of first- and second-degree murder.

A third sibling was with Mrs Krim when the killings took place.

It is not clear how long Mrs Ortega had been working with the family.

Mrs Krim had chronicled her children's upbringing in a blog, Life with the Little Krim Kids, which has since been taken offline.
