US election: How Mitt Romney's defeat unfolded

The tears flowed for Republicans after it was confirmed that Mitt Romney's bid for president had been unsuccessful.

Romney telephoned Barack Obama to congratulate him on his victory before addressing supporters at his base in Boston.
