Williams became a household name in the 1970s as the alien Mork on the ABC TV show Mork and Mindy.

In 1997, Williams starred in What Dreams May Come with Annabella Sciora and Cuba Gooding Jr, pictured here with his co-stars in Cannes.

Williams collected the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Good Will Hunting in 1998. He was nominated for Oscars on three other occasions.

In 2002, he appeared on the Michael Parkinson show with actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry.

One of his last major roles was as President Dwight Eisenhower in The Butler, which was well received on its release in 2013.

Williams had been open about his struggle with alcohol and drugs.

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow comedians, Hollywood, distraught fans and President Barack Obama.
