US mid-terms 2014: Mitch McConnell retains Kentucky seat

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has retained his Kentucky seat in the US mid-term elections.

Senator McConnell, who is his party's leader in the Senate, said the election was not about him or his opponent but the fact that "people no longer trust" the government.

But he hinted at a willingness to work with the president in his victory speech.

"Just because we have a two-party system doesn't mean we have to be in perpetual conflict", he said.
