In pictures: Obama girls' eight years in the White House
- Published

Malia Obama was 10, and her younger sister Sasha seven, when their father was elected president of the United States.

Vice-President Joe Biden made a point of chatting to Sasha at the inauguration.

They left their home in Chicago to move to Washington - here photographers spotted Sasha peering out of the car after dropping her sister off on her first day at her new school.

A Portuguese water dog called Bo soon joined the family, and went on to make many public appearances. A play frame was installed in the White House garden.

The annual Easter Egg roll is a fixture on the White House calendar. Here at the 2010 event, President Obama makes sure Sasha gets her hand over her heart right during the National Anthem.

Another tradition for the First Family is the Thanksgiving 'Turkey Pardoning' - where two birds are excused from being turned into dinner.

The sisters joined their parents on visits to countries including Ghana, Argentina, France, China and the UK - and South Africa, where they read stories to children in a Johannesburg township.

Their father had a habit of bursting into song - here singing Happy Birthday to their mother during a visit to a school in Washington DC.

Usually smiling and interested, the girls were occasionally caught looking a little less impressed by First Family engagements - here at an event to support the US armed forces.

Another election came round in 2012, and Barack Obama secured four more years in the White House.

The sisters were snapped taking a selfie at the parade to mark their father's second inauguration.

White House Christmas traditions include receiving a Christmas tree on a horse-drawn cart, switching on the lights and posing for photos with children dressed as elves at the 'Christmas in Washington' concert...

... and in 2011, there was a sing-a-long with stars including Justin Bieber.

Another year, another Turkey Pardoning, but 2015 was their last. When they didn't turn up to the 2016 event, President Obama said they were escaping the embarrassment of his 'Dad jokes'.
