Katy Perry to headline Radio 1's Big Weekend on Sunday

Katy Perry has been announced as the headline act at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival in Glasgow.

The singer spoke to DJ Nick Grimshaw after he announced the news on his Breakfast Show.

"Typically I'm depressed on Sunday nights. I'm going to shake it off for this particular weekend," she joked.

"I'm very excited because some of my friends will be there. Rita Ora, Chvrches. I love The 1975. Your Saturday line-up is dope," she added.

One Direction have been announced as the opening act at Radio 1's Big Weekend next month.

"We're so excited to perform at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow. Glasgow we're coming to get you," they said.

Speaking about her favourite One Direction member, Perry laughed: "I'm going to be basic, obviously Harry."

Grimshaw also announced Bastille would be at the event, which is being held on 24 and 25 May.

Singer Dan Smith said: "We played last year and it was awesome. We can't wait, we're so excited."

Ed Sheeran also spoke to Grimshaw on the phone after it was revealed he would be performing on the Saturday night.

"I'm looking forward to it. Glasgow is a mental place to go and do shows because the crowds are all up for it," he said.

"I've never had my eardrums be screamed down that much."

Kings of Leon will be opening the main stage on Sunday and will be followed by The Vamps and then John Newman, it was announced.

Tinie Tempah will also join the Big Weekend line-up on Sunday.

Zane Lowe announced that Kasabian would be headlining the In New Music We Trust Stage on Sunday. He will reveal the rest of the line-up on his show on Monday night.

Grimshaw also confirmed Jake Bugg would be taking to the stage, before speaking to the musician live on the phone from Australia.

"It's always a good gig in Glasgow. Crowds are just up for it," said the 20-year-old.

Lily Allen was the fourth act to be confirmed during the Breakfast Show.

"I've got some exciting surprises in store about the way the show is being presented. It's been a long time coming, I'm very excited," she said.

Coldplay have already been announced as the headline act on the Saturday night at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow.

Chris Martin broke the news on Radio 1 last week, as Coldplay appeared in the Live Lounge on Fearne Cotton's mid-morning show.

Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini are already confirmed to play.

Last month the 50,000 free tickets for this year's event were snapped up in just over half an hour on the morning of release.

There is no charge for the event itself, but a fee of £2.50 per ticket covers ticket handling, postage and other associated costs.

The station's flagship event will be held at the city's Glasgow Green. The city will also play host to the Commonwealth Games this summer.

DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong and Zane Lowe will kick off Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow with a huge outdoor party.

They will be joined by some of the world's biggest DJs on Friday, 23 May to host the event for 14,000 music fans live from George Square.

Last year's Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry was headlined by Calvin Harris, Biffy Clyro and Bruno Mars.

In the lead up to the event, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning will also open the doors to Radio 1's Academy from 10-16 May.

During the week, Radio 1 hopes to inspire local 16 to 19-year-olds by inviting them to attend a series of radio shows, master classes and Q&As.

Big Weekend, which will be produced in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, will be broadcast live on Radio 1, 1Xtra and streamed on the Radio 1 website.

Highlights will also be broadcast live on BBC Three.
