Snow closes more than 3,000 schools across UK on Friday

Nel reports from snowy south Wales

More than 3,000 schools in England, Wales and Scotland were closed by snow on Friday.

Around 1,200 schools were shut in Wales, where up to 30cm of snow was expected on high ground.

Over 500 schools closed in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and around 300 in Gloucestershire.

In Norfolk, 300 schools were shut. The area's already been badly hit this week with some schools shut for the past three days.

In Somerset, 134 schools closed - that figure was 130 in Birmingham and the Black Country.

178 schools and colleges didn't run any classes in Wiltshire.

Other areas with schools shut included Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Berkshire and Shropshire.

Flights were cancelled at several airports including Heathrow, Cardiff and Bristol, while Birmingham and Southampton airports stayed completely closed until later on Friday evening.
