United confirmed on Wednesday morning that Ferguson will be stepping down after 26 years in charge.

Ferguson said in a statement: "The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time."

He'll take on a new dual role as director and ambassador.

United are confident of announcing a successor to Ferguson before the weekend - with David Moyes and Jose Mourinho the favourites to replace him.

The club said in a statement: "The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board."
