Louis Van Gaal has been confirmed as the new manager at Manchester United, on a three-year contract.

He said he's "very proud" to be taking charge of what he called "the world's biggest club".

Ryan Giggs, who stood in as manager after David Moyes was sacked, will stay at the club as an assistant coach.

Louis van Gaal - a man used to winning
  • National titles: Ajax (1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96), Barcelona (1997-98, 1998-99), AZ Alkmaar (2008-09), Bayern Munich (2009-10)

  • Champions League: Ajax (1994-95)

  • Uefa Cup: Ajax (1991-92)

Louis van Gaal will take over at Old Trafford after leading the Netherlands at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

"This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history," he said.

It's thought he'll be allowed to spend money bringing in new players to strengthen the squad.

United sacked Moyes in April only 10 months after he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, who was in charge for 26 years before retiring last summer.

It's been a bad season for Manchester United - they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995-96 and are out of European football entirely for the first time in 25 years.

Louis van Gaal's career

The current manager of the Netherlands national side may not be the best-known manager to English fans - but players and fellow coaches reckon he could the perfect man for the top job at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman started his career as a player at 20 years old, playing for Royal Antwerp, Telstar, Sparta Rotterdam and AZ.

  • His managerial career began in 1991 at Ajax, winning three league titles with the club, and most importantly the Champions League in 1995.

  • He's credited with developing some of Dutch football's biggest stars of all time, including Patrick Kluivert, the De Boer brothers, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids and Edwin van der Sar.

  • He has won league titles with every team he has managed, including Barcelona, AZ and most recently Bayern Munich.

  • He's leading the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup, with a very strong qualifying record of nine wins out of ten. They look like very strong contenders for the crown.
