These stunning aerial photos show the volcanic eruption in Iceland on Friday, which caused a brief red alert for flights in the area.

Smoke clouds could be seen rising from a crack about one kilometre long in the lava field.

There was no ash though, which was good news for planes.

Scientists have been watching the area closely because of worries over the nearby Bardarbunga volcano.

Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, creating loads of ash that caused disruption to air travel across Europe.
