Beatrix Potter: Stamps mark anniversary of author's birth

The Tale of Peter Rabbit has sold over 40 million copies since it was first published and now the star of the book has his very own stamp.

The story was first published in 1901 and became famous all over the world thanks to its wonderful characters, including Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.

Beatrix created Peter Rabbit in 1893, naming her creation after her own pet bunny. Tom Kitten, a young cat who gets himself into quite a bit of trouble with his siblings, is also loved by many and features on a stamp.

As does Squirrel Nutkin, a curious little creature who also stars in Beatrix's The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. Beatrix wrote and illustrated 24 stories about animals, the last will be published in September after being discovered in an archive.

Benjamin Bunny, seen here, is another special character. Royal Mail's Philip Parker said the stamps showed some "unforgettable characters which have been loved by successive generations".
