Paris pupils could get extra hour in bed

If you feel sleepy in your morning lessons, spare a thought for pupils in France. They start school an hour earlier than we do!

But that could be changing as the French Minister for Education has agreed to consider giving teenagers an extra hour in bed.

High School (known as Lycée) classes currently start at 8am, but this could push back to 9am in an experiment that would affect older teenagers at school in parts of Paris.

Valérie Pécresse, the regional president in charge of the Ile-de-France area of the French capital, tweeted the Education Minister with the suggestion, saying that later start times would improve students' health and their school performance.

But it will only be pupils aged between 15 and 18 who get an extra lie-in.

Many experts believe that teens need more sleep, and think that hormones in their changing brains could be to blame for their tiredness. These same hormones change teenagers' natural sleep cycle, meaning they don't get tired until later at night, and then want to sleep later in the mornings.

What would you like to change about your school hours? Would you like extra sleep, or would you prefer to start and finish earlier? Do you think it's fair that teenagers get the late start or should the new rule apply to all Lycée students?
