The streets of Madrid were filled with sheep this weekend as shepherds guided their flocks through Spain's capital Madrid.

More than a thousand sheep and goats filled the streets as part of an annual traditional Spanish festival called Transhumance.

The event allows shepherds to use traditional routes to move their livestock from northern Spain to more southerly pastures for winter grazing.

The route would have taken them through quiet countryside a few centuries ago, but today sees them walk through the busy city.

Shepherds dressed in traditional costumes accompany their flocks with folk music and dancing.

The sheep walk to the sound of their jangling neck bells.

Large crowds of people FLOCKED to the streets to welcome back the festival, which was cancelled last year because of coronavirus.
