Venice canals run dry as Italy braces for drought
- Published

The city of Venice in Italy is famous for its canals, bridges and water taxis - but right now some waterways are running dry after weeks of dry weather.

The city is usually more concerned with floods, but this drought has sparked fears ambulances and water taxis will struggle to get around. Traditional gondola rides have also been affected.

The problems in Venice are being blamed not only on a lack of rainfall, but also on a high pressure weather system, full moon and sea currents.

It comes after scientists say The Alps mountain range has had less than half their usual snowfall - causing problems at ski resorts across countries in the mountains.

Water levels at Lake Garda in northern Italy have reached record lows. In this satellite image you can see the lake before the droughts...

The River Po in the north of the country also has 61% less water than it usually has at this time of the year.
