Would you want your street to close for play?

Have you ever wanted to play out in your local street, but couldn't? Well, that could soon change in parts of the UK.

A non-profit organisation called Playing Out have been campaigning for streets around the country to be temporarily closed - that means closed for a short period of time - to allow children to play outside safely in them.

Now, people living in Wolverhampton are being encouraged to apply to their local council for temporary road closures to allow children to play out.

These closures would mean that cars won't be able to drive on them during this time, making it safer for children to play.

As part of the national Playing Out scheme people can apply for their street to be closed for up to three hours to allow children to play.

Some children in the UK do not have a park or play area nearby to where they live, so schemes like this could give children a safe outdoor space to play for a few hours.

Wolverhampton councillor Jasbir Jaspal said: "Playing Out days are a wonderful opportunity to give children free rein to play outside their homes in a healthy, safe and inclusive environment.

She added: "It can help to create a real sense of community, bringing neighbours of all ages and generations together and creating opportunities for them to socialise and build long-lasting connections."

Anyone in Wolverhampton can apply for a temporary road closure, however not all roads are able to be closed. The council said that main roads or roads which are on a bus route could not be closed.
