Do you like to write in your spare time?

- Published
Do you enjoy writing in your free time? Well, according to new research, only a quarter of children do.
This has nearly halved since 2010, when nearly half of children aged 8 to 18 said they liked to put pen to paper outside of school, according to the National Literacy Trust - a charity that helps people with reading and writing.
They spoke to over 100,000 children as part of their Annual Literacy Survey, which runs every year, and has seen the levels of writing enjoyment drop over the past 15 years.
We want to know if you enjoy writing, and if so, what do you like to write? If you don't enjoy writing, why not tell us why that is.

Results of 2025 Annual Literacy Survey
The National Literacy Trust asked 114,970 children aged 5 to 18 how they feel about writing.
Only 1 in 4 (26.6%) children aged 8 to 18 said they enjoy writing in their spare time, with 1 in 3 children saying they don't like it at all.
And just 1 in 10 kids of the same age said they write something in their free time every day.
Overall, the National Literacy Trust says that in 2025, children's enjoyment of writing has reached its lowest in 15 years.

The survey also looked at what motivates children to write in their spare time.
Nearly half (48.7%) of children like to write to be creative, while 40.8% of children use it as a way to explore thoughts and feelings.
Do you find writing relaxing? The survey showed that 37% of the children surveyed do.
Of the children that don't enjoy writing, many still do it for practical reasons like writing reminders down, writing notes or just for practice.
