Welcome to Spider Season 2025!

If you think you've noticed more spiders in the house than usual then you are probably not mistaken.

Spider season usually starts in the UK end of August and goes on until mid-October or November.

So what should you do if you see one in your house?

Read on to find out more from spider expert Adam Hart and let us know in the comments below if you've seen any in your home.

What is spider season?

This time of year is known as spider season

Professor Adam Hart is a Professor of Science Communication at the University of Gloucestershire and knows a lot about spiders.

He said "Welcome to Spider Season 2025! Between late August and mid October we tend to see more spiders in our homes."

Professor Hart told Newsround the reason is that this is the time male spiders become active as they look for females to mate with.

If it seems a bit earlier than usual this year, it could well be.

"I have been seeing some big house spiders for the past few weeks," Professor Hart said.

"Spider Season varies a little from year to year, most likely because of the weather, but by the start of September it is usually well underway."

Should we be afraid of spiders?

If you want to get rid of a spider try placing a glass on top and sliding a piece of cardboard underneath

While some people are afraid of spiders, it is worth knowing that there are no deadly spiders in the UK and very few that bite.

Spiders are actually important part of the ecosystem and help reduce the number of flying insects.

They build webs out of a sticky silk to catch insects like flies.

"The most common species we are seeing at the moment, and the ones that tend to make people jump the most, are a handful of species known as 'house spiders'. "

These are dark spiders with long legs.

If you really don't want them in the house Professor Hart recommends putting them outside by putting a glass over then sliding a piece of card underneath.

Then the spider can be safely transported outside.
