In Pictures: Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts again

Low-level lava fountains have occurred

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has been erupting again.
The volcano which is on the southeastern part of the island of Hawaii is currently going through the latest episode of an ongoing eruption.
Kilauea's latest eruption began 23 December 2024 and has been stopping and starting since then.

During eruptions in recent weeks, lava fountains have reached heights of 1,000 feet.
This latest episode which began on 7 April has had lower lava fountains, up to 100 feet or 30 meters.

The lava fountains feed a lava flow on the crater floor
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists visited the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu crater to take measurements and make observations.
By using laser beams they were able to measure the lava fountains below them.

On the 8 April, despite continued lava fountaining at the south vent geologists observed that activity declined at the north vent (foreground left in below pjoyo).
The north vent's lava pond is fully crusted over in the left of this photo.
