Plant and nature-inspired names are "evergreen" according to a naming expert

SJ Strum, a baby expert and author of Baby Name Envy, said that "traditional" names will always top the list, but that some names are influenced by things like films and TV shows .

For example on the girls list this year is Margot, which could be because of Barbie movie actress Margot Robbie, and Athena - which made it to the top 100 for the first time - which could be after the Gladiator Athena.

Clare Green, another expert who writes for baby-naming website Nameberry, said that plant and nature-inspired names are "evergreen" and will generally always be popular.

For example, this year Poppy, Lily and Ivy made the top ten girls name list.

Clare also said there was a general 100-year rule, where names that used to be thought of as old-fashioned, become popular again.

"We tend to use names which are just old enough not to be a grandparent name, but the generation up," she said.
