A new giant sea bug species has been discovered in Vietnam in south-east Asia.

The huge creature is thought to live deep underwater and can grow more than 30cm in length.

It has been identified as giant isopod - a group of animals that also includes woodlice.

It has been named Bathynomus vaderi - as its head looks like the helmet of Star Wars' Darth Vader.

What was discovered?

A team of experts from Hanoi University and the National University of Singapore first came across Bathynomus vaderi in an unlikely place - a market in Vietnam!

They picked up four giant isopods from the market and decided to take a closer look at the different creatures, which helped them discover the huge new species.

They decided to name it Bathynomus vaderi not only because its face looks like Darth Vader's mask, but also because the creature is thought to live around 1000 metres underwater, where it is extremely dark.

Experts say that so far, Bathynomus vaderi has only been found near the Spratly Islands in Vietnam, but they expect further research to confirm its presence in other parts of the South China Sea.

They added that more research needs to be done to better understand our deep-sea biodiversity - especially as humans increasingly look to benefit from this habitat to obtain natural resources such as oil and gas as well as for fishing purposes.
