More heavy rain forecast after weekend of very wet and thundery weather

Some areas could see a month's worth of rainfall in just one day

After a wet and stormy weekend, the Met Office has said there is a risk of flooding for some parts of the UK, with heavier rain forecast.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for rain in parts of central England such as Birmingham, Nottingham and Hull.

It started at 5am today, and will last until 9pm tonight (Monday).

Amber warnings are the second most severe, and mean the weather could have an impact on people, possibly including travel delays, road and rail closures and power cuts.

It's thought over a month's worth of rain could fall in one day in places.

A less severe yellow rain warning is in place across a larger area of England and Wales, and the Environment Agency - responsible for managing flood risks from main rivers - have issued flood warnings.

They've put warnings in 69 places where flooding is possible, and 13 places where flooding is likely.

The warnings come following bad weather over the weekend.

Some areas had very heavy rain, and others saw lightning and thunder.

Bedfordshire was one area affected by heavy rain and flooding.

On Sunday night, Bedfordshire Police said the weather was causing "multiple issues" in the county.

"All emergency services and council teams are working as quickly as possible to help those affected but our priority will be the vulnerable," the force said. "Please stay clear of flooded roads and affected areas."

Up to 13,000 lightning strikes were recorded throughout Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday across the country.

Power outages were also reported across parts of south-west and central England.

And areas such as Cornwall, the Midlands and north-east Wales saw lots of storms.

Weather expert and chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Frank Saunders said: “Following on from the heavy rain that some of us have seen on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the new working week begins with rain across a large swathe of England and Wales.

"The area with the higher likelihood of impactful rain is now covered by an Amber warning, stretching from Gloucester across the Midlands to the Wash and the Humber."

Last week may have been the final bit of sunny summery weather, as it's now about to get a bit colder in the UK.

The Met Office has said that as Arctic air is blown from the North, temperatures are expected to drop to between 8 and 12 degrees celsius, which is colder than usual for this time of year.
