Lots of places in North Wales have been affected by a burst water pipe

Four primary schools and one secondary school in Conwy have been forced to close after a burst pipe at a water treatment plant left them without water.

The burst in the water main - which is the main pipe in a water supply system - happened at Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works in Dolgarrog, Conwy.

It's affected thousands of homes in Glan Conwy, Llanrwst and nearby areas in North Wales, as well as a library and a doctors' surgery.

Local councillor Goronwy Edwards told the BBC that more schools are being impacted, with low water pressure meaning that some have been unable to run breakfast clubs.

Welsh Water says it is doing all it can to fix the problem

Mr Edwards said that distribution centres are being set up to help get water to those affected.

The treatment centre is run by Welsh Water, which has said that about 8,000 homes lost water on Wednesday night, with a 33,000 more at risk until the problem has been fixed.

Welsh Water said: "Our crews are on site and working on the repair. We are rerouting water through our network and tankers are being mobilised to keep as many people on supply as possible.

"We apologise to anyone whose water supply is interrupted and would like to reassure them we are working hard to resolve this issue as soon as possible."
