The Europa League is an annual football club competition organised by Uefa, which has been taking place, under different names, for more than 50 years.

Introduced in 1971 as the Uefa Cup, it was rebranded in 2009 as the Europa League.

It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the UEFA Champions League, and above the UEFA Conference League.

Clubs across Europe qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.

Every year, England receives two Europa League places. For next season's competition one of those will go to the team who come sixth in the Premier League this season, and the other place goes to the winners of the FA Cup - meaning that Crystal Palace is guaranteed a spot in the competition next season too.

This year's final is taking place at the San Mamés Stadium in the Spanish city of Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May.

Kick-off is at 8pm.

The venue is home to Athletic Club and has a capacity of just over 53,000.

Last year it staged the Uefa Women's Champions League final, in which Barcelona were 2-0 winners against Lyon.

That's a good question and we don't know yet! But both teams have lifted the trophy before.

Tottenham Hotspur have won it twice - when the tournament was known as the UEFA Cup - in 1972 and 1984.

Manchester United last won the Europa League eight years ago in 2017 but lost the final in 2021.

This season, both teams have faced each other three times - with Spurs winning all three meetings - twice in the Premier League and once in the League Cup.

But Manchester United are still unbeaten in this competition, whereas Spurs have lost twice.

How big is the Europa League trophy and what is it made of?

Here's a fun fact, did you know that the Europa League trophy is the heaviest of all Uefa silverware - even the Champions League trophy.

And unlike other cups awarded in European club competition, it has no handles.

The Europa League trophy weighs 15kg - about the weight of a medium sized dog - and it is 65cm tall.

The cup is made of silver and sits on a yellow marble plinth.

The bottom of the trophy features flags of the UEFA member nations as well a sculpture of a group of players scrapping for the ball.

As well as the prize money, there's also another huge perk of being crowned Europa League champions.

The winners will qualify for next year's Champions League competition.

They will also seal their place in the 2025 Uefa Super Cup, where they will face the winners of next week's Champions League final.

Do the winners get to keep the Europa League trophy?

No, the winners of the Europa League are given a full-sized replica of the trophy to put in their trophy room.

Uefa keep hold of the original trophy at all times.

However, any club which wins it three years in a row - or five times in total - receives a special mark of recognition.

That happened to Spanish club Sevilla who won it in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
