The Houthis control most of Yemen and say they are supporting their ally Hamas in Palestine by targeting shipping headed to Israel. They have been firing rockets and drones at ships travelling through the area.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that action was necessary to protect people on board ships and the movement of trade around the world, and that Royal Air Force warplanes helped carry out "targeted strikes" against military facilities.
US President Joe Biden said that other countries including The Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Bahrain helped support the mission.
