Justin Gatlin wins Rome Diamond League 100m

Great Britain sprinter Adam Gemili finished third in the 100m in the Golden League Gala in Rome in a season's best time of 10.07 seconds.

The race was won by American Justin Gatlin in 9.91, with British world 60m champion Richard Kilty finishing ninth.

Gemili, 20, was hoping to become the first Briton to go under 10 seconds for the 100m and 20 seconds for the 200m.

"It's always in every sprinter's sights to get that 10-second barrier. It will come eventually," said Gemili.

The Blackheath and Bromley Harrier had run a time of 10.08 seconds at the Bedford International Games last weekend and was pleased to go faster in Rome as he builds towards the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the European Championships in Zurich in August.

"It was my first proper international race and I did well," the former footballer told BBC Sport.

"I have progressed from last week and hopefully I will get quicker and quicker as the season goes on."

Scotland's Eilidh Child finished third in the 400m hurdles in a season's best time of 54.82 seconds.
