Glasgow 2014: Sir Peter Heatly's grandson James feels no pressure

Heatly will make his Commonwealth Games debut at this summer's Games

Diver James Heatly insists he does not feel under pressure to emulate the achievements of his grandfather ahead of this month's Commonwealth Games.

Sir Peter Heatly won five Commonwealth medals in the 1950s - three of them gold - and later went on to chair the Commonwealth Games Federation.

This summer, 16-year-old James will compete in the 3m springboard event at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

"They're a huge inspiration," said James of his grandfather's medals.

"I've seen them lots of times. Everyone wants Commonwealth medals.

"As the sport's changed and this being my first Commonwealth Games, its probably not going to be the first thing on my mind.

"I've not had much senior competition experience. Hopefully I'll be hitting a personal best so my scores will just be increasing but I'm not sure if the gold medal is going to be this time around."

The teenager was one of two divers named in Scotland's largest ever aquatics team for a Commonwealth Games, with Grace Reid competing in the women's 1m springboard event.

Of the 40-strong aquatics team, 28, including the young Heatly, are making their Games debut.

Sir Peter won silver in his grandson's event in Auckland in 1950 and followed that with a gold in Vancouver four years later.

His other two golds, in Auckland and Cardiff (1958), and bronze in Vancouver were in the 10m highboard.

"We do talk about diving, we watch videos back and discuss things about them," explained James.

"But there's also a lot of other things to speak about being in the family, so it's a bit of both really.

"I don't feel much added pressure because I'm just out there to do my thing. Grandpa's done his, it's my turn now."

Sir Peter takes great pride in having been the inspiration for his grandson's move in to the sport and is on hand to offer advice.

"I tell him if it's good or otherwise," he joked.

And, of James's appearance at this summer's Games, he added: "I'll be there and it'll be a very proud moment, certainly.

"I'm sure he can do very well."
