A five-wicket haul from Ryan Sidebottom helped Yorkshire stay in control of their Division Two clash with Essex.
The visitors began on 72-5 but Sidebottom restricted them to 199 with the wickets of James Foster, Tim Phillips and Maurice Chambers.
Ravi Bopara (117 not out) was Essex's best player by some distance, while four of their batsmen failed to score.
Joe Root (67) lifted Yorkshire to 144-2, a lead of 191, by the close leaving Essex with a battle to save the game.
Sidebottom ended with figures of 5-30 off 24 overs for his 24th first-class five-wicket haul of his career.
