MCC: Former Sussex captain Mike Griffith to be next president

Former Sussex captain Mike Griffith is to be the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Griffith, who also played hockey for England and Great Britain, will succeed Yorkshire businessman Phillip Hodson on 1 October for a one year-term.

He was chosen by Hodson, and his appointment was made at Lord's during the MCC's annual general meeting.

The 68-year-old follows his father Billy, another former Sussex player, who was MCC president in 1979-80.

Hodson said: "In my opinion, Mike is exactly what MCC require in a president - he has an in-depth knowledge of the club, a passion for Lord's, and a great love of cricket."

Griffith made his Sussex debut in 1962, the year before he became an MCC member and went to Cambridge University.

He became a Cambridge Blue in cricket, hockey and rackets, before going on captain Sussex for five years. He retired in 1974.

Griffith is the only person to have played first-class cricket and international hockey at Lord's.

The MCC still has worldwide responsibility for the game's laws and also owns Lord's. Traditionally, its president nominates his own successor.
