Northants: Alex Wakely hopeful of involvement despite injury

Northamptonshire limited-overs captain Alex Wakely is still hoping to be involved behind the scenes this season despite his long-term Achilles injury.

The 25-year-old batsman was hurt in tour match in Barbados and is likely to miss most of the 2014 campaign.

Wakely averaged 29.30 as Northants won the FLt20 trophy last season.

"As one-day captain someone is going to take over. I want to be involved but at the same time I don't want to step on their toes," Wakely said.

"They've got to do it their own way."

As well as leading Northants to their first major trophy win in 21 years last season in the T20, Wakely was also vice-captain as the side won promotion from Division Two of the County Championship.

The Wantage Road academy product agreed a new two-year deal in January that will keep him at the club until 2015.

"I played a shot out to the boundary, went to push off for a single and I felt and heard a popping sound in the back of my Achilles," he told BBC Look East.

"At the time it felt like someone had hit be around the back of the leg with a baseball bat.

"It's still very raw at the moment and I've got a lot of emotions going around in my head.

"I think it will give me a different perspective on cricket.

"I'm already chomping at the bit to get back and if I can get back fitter and stronger than I was then I want to push on with my career."
