All-rounder Jesse Ryder claimed 10 wickets in a match for the first time as his Essex side drew with Kent.
Ryder, whose 5-56 gave him match figures of 10-110, removed Rob Key, Sam Northeast and Brendan Nash as Kent added 38 went from 71-0 to 73-3.
But opener Daniel Bell-Drummond (92) stuck around to stem any Essex hopes of snatching a final-day win.
Ryder denied him a century and dismissed Mitchell Claydon before the end came with Kent on 255-8.
Essex, who moved up to third in the Division Two table, may have sensed an opportunity to salvage a victory from a rain-affected match after posting a 53-run lead with their total of 440 the day before.
And those hopes were heightened when Ryder made inroads into Kent's top order.
But 20-year-old Bell-Drummond's highest County Championship knock of the season, supported by Ben Harmison (22) and Darren Stevens (47), saw the visitors through to the finish.
