Cricket World Cup 2015: Upul Tharanga gets Sri Lanka call-up

Upul Tharanga scored two centuries at the 2011 World Cup, at which Sri Lanka were runners-up

Opening batsman Upul Tharanga has been called up to Sri Lanka's World Cup squad as a replacement for injured all-rounder Jeevan Mendis.

Mendis, 32, has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament after injuring a hamstring in training on Tuesday.

The inclusion of Tharanga, 30, was approved by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka face Bangladesh in Melbourne on Thursday before playing England in Wellington on Sunday.

They lost the first of their six Pool A matches to New Zealand on 14 February, but won their second, against Afghanistan on Sunday.

Tharanga has played 176 one-day internationals, scoring 5,339 runs at an average of 33.57 with 13 centuries and 28 half-centuries. He played his most recent ODI against India in November.

He hit two centuries at the 2011 World Cup, at which Sri Lanka reached the final before losing to India in Mumbai.
