Everton

Everton boss Brian Sorensen, speaking to the BBC on whether he's frustrated not to get a point: "Yeah, super frustrated. I think on behalf the girls I'm very gutted for them because they deserved more.

"I think we put everything into the game. I don't see teams very often go through [Manchester] City like we did today. It's just that sharpness, finishing our chances. [Ayaka] Yamashita also had a good day. We just need to keep going and doing what we're doing because we are on the right path."

Manchester City

Man City boss Andree Jeglertz speaking to BBC Sport about his team being the one to catch: "Yeah it's nice. You can't say anything about that, but at the same time there are no medals in November. We just need to keep on focusing on each performance. We have a huge game next weekend so when we go back on the bus we start preparing for that.

"We are definitely happy about that [being top of the league]. We have had a great Autumn so far, we just need to keep on going."

Manchester City

Man City boss Andree Jeglertz speaking to BBC Sport: "It's very important for us to win. Not a perfect game, definitely not, but in the same way it says something about the team that we managed to win it anyway. These games where you don't play the most beautiful game but still continue winning, that is going to give you the opportunity to have a good result at the end of the season.

"Everton was causing a lot of problems for us. We were struggling figuring out their loading in the midifield, they created overloads in there and we did not manage with them well enough. In the other way we managed to keep the victory anyway so I am happy with that."

On how he's helped to change the mentality of the group: "I think it's very important that we have so many good players. They have been through so many different things in their careers, they have so much knowledge and have won so much with this team.

"To bring everybody together so that everybody feels we are part of it, it's not just the head coach ideas and role. We are trying to build something to so everyone feels 'this is Man City' and this is our team. Maybe that is on thing that has caused it."

On Khadija Shaw's winner:

It's about being ruthless. I feel like a lot of their last few years has been about being possession-based, scoring the beautiful goals, this is a beautiful goal but it's about getting the job done and being clinical in front of goal is what they want.

It's a beautiful cross from Ouahabi and there she is, Bunny Shaw in that space. You know she's good in the air. And then that little step and you know she's going to score from that area.

On if it's Man City's year to win the WSL:

Potentially. They've already taken advantage of Chelsea dropping points and now they're top of the table. Now it's about staying there. It's about getting three points. They're not in the Champions League. They're in all the other domestic cups. It's their chance to really grab the title and go all the way now.

Manchester City

Man City striker Khadija Shaw speaking to BBC Sport about the mentality shift within the group last season: "We had a set back last year, no Champions League, and we sat down as a group at the end of last season and had an honest conversation between ourselves.

"We are an honest group and hold ourselves to higher standards, and coming into pre-season that is something we definitely drived. In every training session, every small sided game, we want to get better and I think it's showing in the games."

Man City striker Khadija Shaw speaking to BBC Sport: "To be fair it was a very difficult game. Everton made it very difficult and we made it difficult for ourselves, that's the way we've been going all season. The difference I think is that we just tried to get the job done because at the end of the day the three points is all that matters and we grind out the win. Definitely happy."

On going top: "It's massive. For us we always say we just focus on ourselves. At the end of the day we just have to focus on what we can control and our performances on the pitch and that is what we've been doing. To be in and around the top of the table is a good feeling."

"There's a mentality shift compared to last season. This season we don't care. This season we just need the three points. Compared to last season we fell short in a couple of the games but this season the mentality is the biggest thing."

I feel like Man City coming here, Goodison Park, an Everton team that shows desire, the passion, the commitment, but at the end of the day Man City just had to win. They had to get the job done, they had to get three points and capitalise on Chelsea dropping points against Arsenal.

Yamashita played so well in goal and kept them in that game. Bunny Shaw with the winner at the end, I feel like we know what she can do. Clinical, she's great in the air and she's the winner at the end of the day. She's got that three points for Manchester City. Really hard fought three points for them.

Man City are top of the league for the first time this season.

A great weekend for Andree Jeglertz's side.

For Everton, it's a result to be so proud of. And for Manchester City it's a result to be proud of because they really earned that. They had to dig deep. They had to work hard in and out of possession.

Everton made them earn every ounce of that victory. And if you if you want to go on and win a title you can look back at games like this one that could easily have snuck by you if you've not been as disciplined as Manchester City were.

So there we have it.

Manchester City take full advantage of both Chelsea and United's slip ups to take top spot in the table.

Whisper it quietly, we may have an intriguing title race on our hands...

At the other end a point each for Liverpool and West Ham earlier means that every team is now off the mark for the campaign.

Man City have won their last seven games in the Women's Super League, their last longer winning streak was from 19th November 2023 to 28th April 2024, a run of 14 games.

Manchester City move a point above defending champions Chelsea as they take their place at the top of the league table.
