European T20: Guernsey and Jersey battle to win tournament

Jersey and Guernsey will meet in their final match at the European T20 Championships with first place still up for grabs for both teams.

Both of the Channel Island sides have won three of their four games and are joined at the top by Italy and Denmark, who have the same tournament record.

They are only separated by net run rate, with the group winners advancing to the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier.

"We almost have nothing to lose," said Guernsey captain Jamie Nussbaumer.

"We knew we were going to be playing Jersey last but we obviously didn't know it could possibly be a title decider."

Guernsey did have a 100% record, having beaten Denmark, Norway and France, but defeat by table-toppers Italy in their most recent game has blown the group wide open.

Leading up to the tournament, Nussbaumer said they were targeting four victories in the championships, which is still within reach.

"We just want to win the game and win it well. If it means we miss out on winning it on net run rate than so be it," Nussbaumer told BBC Guernsey.

"If we can come out of this tournament with four wins out of five it would've been an absolutely incredible tournament for us."

Jersey sit above Guernsey on net run rate, which is calculated by the average runs scored by a team per over.

Having won both their games on the opening day, Jersey lost to Denmark by seven wickets, former Derbyshire County player Freddie Klokker doing the damage with a speedy 31 runs.

However the hosts bounced back with a 19 run victory later in the day against France.

"We would've loved to beat Denmark but we learnt a lot from it and we're really happy to have an opportunity to win the tournament," Jersey skipper Peter Gough said.

"We'll put absolutely everything into the Guernsey game, and we'll bear in mind the run rate, but we'll just go out to win the game and hopefully that'll be good enough."
